History

Unique and Wooden Toys Ltd was established in 2006 initially as an online store only. A friend mentioned that we should visit Backridge Farm as it would be an ideal setting for a toy shop. We did visit and immediately fell in love with the site. Unique and Wooden Toys opened in April 2007.

The Toys

Inspired by our children we decided to bring together a wonderful selection of wooden toys and adorably soft plush toys for both babies and children of pre-school age.

The unique soft toys have been chosen for their exquisite feel and appearance. In their first few weeks, a baby will attach itself to something which provides comfort and security. These plush toys, many made from natural materials, will become a valued and important companion for your baby.

Many of the wooden toys provide an educational value which is so important for young children who are constantly developing in the early years. Children love to explore and see how things fit together. A wooden toy is durable and can withstand the demands of young hands. Easy to fix if they are broken, but rarely do we find that necessary.

Well made toys provide a learning environment and a respect for quality. There is something very special about a child engaged in play, their imagination stimulated as they touch and manipulate a toy. The look and feel of wood itself is very different to that of plastic and with many of our toys handmade, the appearance of the wood even when painted, can instil a sense of appreciation.

Why wooden toys?

There is something very theraputic about the sound of wood on wood, a very natural sound and feel, something that can appeal to young children very early on. The durablity of wooden toys is second to none and the imagination that can be stimulated by a very simple shape is immense. Many of our wooden toys are natural, hand crafted, with very few mass produced, and a high percentage coming from European suppliers where design, quality and safety is at the forefront of their toys.

Why soft toys?

From just a few weeks old a child can find comfort in something that is familiar and will take that item around with them, sometimes until years old. There is something very wonderful about that and we are constantly searching for that 'extra special' gift that can become a child's companion. From handmade comforters by Kathe Kruse to Handmade Limited Edition Gollies made by Robin Rive we have already sourced some very popular and unique soft toys.

All toys are compliant with the European CE quality standard.

Birthday Club
We have a birthday club for children aged 0-6 with every member receiving a personalised card and a small gift on their birthday. You can join on-line, by e-mail or by visiting the shop.

Special services
We are constantly creating new ideas in which to use our range of toys and especially aim to make our gifts unusual and exciting. Although these are not currently available on-line we would be very happy to discuss your requirements over the phone if you are unable to visit our shop.

Pass the Parcel and Baby Bags
We are able to offer ‘Pass the Parcel’ boxes for your child’s party (all tailor made to suit your requirements) and ‘bespoke baby bags’ for newborn babies and their mums.

Gift Lists
We are happy to provide your friends and family with a Birthday, Christening or Christmas List which works just like a wedding list!

Loyalty cards and Gift Vouchers
